Last night Rayna and I went to see Alejandro Escovedo at 12 Galaxies. It was great to feel so young. Not in the way we used to when we'd elbow our way up to the stage, dance, drink, and make eyes at the band. No, in the way that we were pretty much the youngest people in the room. There were probably a few folks younger than we are, but for the most part everyone was older than us by at least a decade. Since I usually feel like such a Gramma, it was a nice change.
I had forgotten that he had started his career in the SF punk scene until he played "I wanna be your dog" and made references to Mabuhay Gardens and various SF punk bands of the 70s. This elicited very excited audience response. Then I realized that these people who were making me feel so young, were scenesters reliving their former glory. Moms, accountants, social workers--their lives and Alejandro's lives taking similar turns from punk to singer/songwriter and then back to the electric guitar only this time with a cello, a violin, and an iBook.
We all felt a little younger last night.
I heard Escovedo was sick a few years back - they were doing benefit concerts and everything. Is he okay now? I hope so!
Did he sing "Castanets?" That's one of my fave songs. Glad you rocked out.
