All hail Martin Starr.
Last night we watched the "Dead Dogs and Gym Teachers" ep of Freaks and Geeks. That this episode was never shown on television is absolutely criminal. I will admit when I watched the first few episodes of F&G I was like, "Yeah, that was good. Whatever." However, I came around and now I really care about these characters. Nick and his drums? Painfully endearing. Neil and the garage door opener? Tearful. Millie and, well, pretty much anything she does? Sweetly uncynical.
But Bill in "Dead Dogs and Gym Teachers" steals the show, not the episode, but the entire freaking run of the show. The scene where he is eating a cheese sandwich and watching Garry Shandling on TV is worth watching the whole season. He only gets better after that scene, completely breaking my heart by the end. Ah, but NBC viewers never got that chance because the show was cancelled after the previous episode (the also great "Chokin and Tokin").
On the other hand I can understand that the public was calling out for the bug-eating pathos of Fear Factor and the Fergie-shagging-multi-dimensional characters of Las Vegas.
Just seeing the name "Haverchuk" made me happy enough, and then a whole post about F&G, and a shot of Bill as Jamie Sommers! I have the box set of DVDs. I freakin' loved that show. I'm definitely going to watch that episode again later today. Thanks, Nicole!
