I spent this afternoon working off some parking tickets via Project 20 at the mind-boggling SCRAP. The best definition that I can come up with for SCRAP is that it is a thrift store for artists. They take donations of art supplies and fibers, then sell them to you for low, low prices. Allegedly, there is a pricing structure, but it seems to change depending on who is working, how much stuff you want, and how much they want to get rid of the stuff. SCRAP is an organizationally-challenged paradise. The warehouse is always bursting with fabric, yarn, stock photography books, paper, book-making supplies, old calendars, and all types of crazy defunct machinery.
Today's Special: A boatload of yarn that claims to be wool. San Francisco Knitters need to run, not walk to SCRAP to snap up this crazy deal. Each bag is probably a pound of worsted weight yarn and will cost you a cool six bucks (and the price might be dropping). Some of the colors are less than spectacular, but those are light and can be dyed. I am hoping that you all get there before I have a chance to go back and buy some. I managed to resist this time, but who knows what madness lurks in my next trip to SCRAP?
I think it helped that there is a gigantic sale going on at Greenwich Yarns. Greenwich is my least visited LYS because it is all the way in the north of San Francisco and I live all the way in the south of San Francisco. Of course, it is close to where I work, but beyond it thereby making it just that far out of my reach. However, for a sale of this magnitude I made the effort. Tons of stuff is on sale and the back patio is filled with yarns at 50% off. I managed to get out of there with two back issues of Interweave Knits and yarn for a project for a certain baby who so far has missed out on the knit by Nic train. He might be reading this, so I don't want to give to much away, but I bought some lovely (but boyish) variegated Classic Elite Believe.
Speaking of baby goods. I finished my first non-hat baby project for Sadie Wayne, the two month old daughter of some longtime friends of Mr. Big Sister. Voici!
The specs
Pattern: Domestic Sphere's Asymmetrical Baby Sweater with any gauge yarn
Yarn: Reynolds Cabana (65% Cotton, 35% Acrylic)
Needles: US 10 (6mm)
Gauge: 3.25 st/in
Love it! Love the two color thing. I really love the (relatively) instant gratification of baby sweaters. I think I should probably continue having more children if for anything just to keep me knitting baby sweaters. Happy Birthday to your friend! I have an eerily similar friend...
